Montmartre History
Though it
was a sacred hill from the Roman Temples period to the Abbey of
Montmartre and the political tone of Henri the IV, Montmartre
preserved its cultural and artistic identity by offering a home to the
greatest painting movements of the XIX and XX centuries (Impressionnism,
Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, Surrealism). Today, Montmartre remains
alive with six million visitors who like to stroll along the narrow
cobblestone streets of old Paris while taking in the historical and
cultural atmosphere. |

Set on a hill 130 meters high, Montmartre looks out over the city.
Many immortal painters lived and worked in Paris during the late 19th
century, Montmartre and its counterpart on the Left Bank,
Montparnasse, became the principal artistic centers of Paris : artists,
sculptors and writers moved into the area because of its proximity to
the center of Paris, and its cheap rents. Painters like Picasso,
Modigliani, Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse Lautrec, and other lived
and worked here. |
